Dolphins, like humans, rely considerably on body contact for communication. Mothers and calves such as the pair depicted in the new Wyland bronze sculpture, “Sea Dreams,” are often in close contact for long periods of time. The close connection has been considered the mother’s way of protecting the calf — and simply showing affection for it. “Common dolphins are very affectionate,” Wyland says. “They care for their sick by using their fins to keep the ailing dolphin afloat so it can breathe. The mothers in the groups even share responsibilities in taking care of the young.”
