A mother humpback lifting its newborn calf to the surface for its first breath of life has become a signature theme for marine life artist Wyland. For the first time, this seldom-seen moment is being captured forever as a 3 dimensional lucite sculpture.

“People everywhere can relate to this image,” Wyland says. “It’s a celebration of nature and life, and reminds us that all creatures, even ones as majestic as the great whales – depend on their mothers for survival.

Like a window to the underwater universe, Wyland’s newest painting “First Breath Portal” shares an insightful glimpse at the first moments of life for a newborn humpback whale. A nearby escort whale casts a protective eye as the mother lifts her calf to the surface for its first breath. “This is only the start of an amazing journey for the calf,” Wyland says. “Over the course of its life, it will travel thousands of miles and encounter many dangers, but for now it will be safe in the protection of its mother.”
